1899 Paris is roiling over the infamous "Dreyfus Affaire". From the Chamber of Deputies to the popular press to café society, the rumor is that Captain Dreyfus, convicted of treason in 1894 and sentenced to banishment from France for life, is to be given a new trial. However, amidst the growing clamor on both sides, there are those who will stick at nothing to prevent the truth from coming out. Meanwhile, following the Milverton case ("The worst man in London"), Holmes and Watson are keeping a low profile. Upon returning from a rare evening out they are accosted by a young army officer bringing them a letter imploring them to come to the aid of Captain Dreyfus. Glad to be away from London, but at the same time dreading becoming embroiled in the Dreyfus Affaire, they book into the new Ritz Hotel where they are reunited with old friends Cesár Ritz and Auguste Escoffier. But Holmes and Watson face two challenges. First, their mission must remain secret; if discovered, the British Government will disavow any knowledge of their purpose. And, they soon learn that the Dreyfus case has roots in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 and now threatens to bring down the French Government and perhaps bring on a pan-European war that must inevitably involve Britain as well.

I had just finished reading one of several books on this particular Artillery Officer and his troubles. Although this was fiction, it was like it had just stepped out of the papers. I so much enjoy a good Holmes novel and this was no exception in any way. This novel really made the characters human and believable...even more so than the histories.If you like lots of detail and I mean detail... this is the Holmes book for you. If you like historical novels....this is the Holmes book for you. If you like good Holmes novels...this is the good Holmes novel for you.
And did I mention if you liked detail this is what you need to read; ex: the color of the cigarette paper that was on the floor next to the first dead body. Or perhaps the color of the mole on the "lover's" nose, on the left side. I exaggerate a tad, but it does add a bit of interesting closeness to the characters that you don't usually get.
This is a fine read...a fine example of a good Holmes mystery. Well done. Yes, well done!

The period piece nature of the story was interesting, but for me, it was too long and too confusing. Too improbably too.
It took this book to Mexico in February and read it in three days while relaxing on the beach. It's long (600 pages) but thoroughly enjoyable. It uses Holmes and Watson as protagonists to examine the Dreyfus Affair in French politics around the turn of the 19th century. Dreyfus was a loyal officer who was falsely accused of treason, spent four years on Devil's Island (while his wife and family were in Paris), then was returned to France and exonerated. The details are historically correct -- a lot of research went into the writing -- and when placed in context make for fascinating reading.
The Holmes genre allows the author to examine many historical facets of the times by walking through them. The plot builds to a Holmesian climax and what you think is the ultimate escape, only to be followed by two more "incidents" before it ends on the battlefield of World War I. The author weaves into the plot Winston Churchill, Alexandre Escoffier, the originator of the Ritz Hotels, and even Harry Truman and Douglas MacArthur -- all believably if you allow some poetic license.
Told in the third person, this doesn't count as a straight pastiche, but it does recount a tale which fits well into both history and the Holmesian canon. There's plenty of adventure, too, with both Holmes and Watson coming in for a fair share of danger and action.
This book covered Holmes and Watson just as Sir A. C . Doyle would have written the book. This book covered a vast series of mysterious people, Times and adventures.
Well written and it was hard to put down. Great job.
I stumbled across this great book by accident. I was looking for a book on the Dreyfus Affair and this Holmes mystery came in the results. Being a big fan of Watson and Holmes I decided to try the sample and immediately enjoyed the writing style and characterisation. The author has done a very good job here and the story kept a good steady pace, slowly building up into the action and ending with an enlightened moment of recognition. I also liked the various cameo appearances throughout and clearly the author researched the period well. It is written in the third person perspective, however in my opinion that does not detract at all from the Holmesian adventure. Because of this excellent book I will check out some of the authors other writings. Highly recommend.
This Sherlock Holmes pastiche starts with a good idea but, frankly, throws the kitchen sink at it. All sorts of real events from the era are merged into it, including (as the title indicates) the Dreyfus affair. Many traps, chases, and encounters with historic persons as well as many from the canon.
I found my interest flagging at several points, but did manage to finish it after putting it aside a couple of times. Your mileage may vary.
